A complaint has been laid with police following claims racial abuse was levelled at a Fijian rugby player during a finals game at Christchurch's Rugby Park at the weekend.

The winger, Sake Aca, left the field in tears and couldn't continue play due to the taunts, allegedly made by supporters of the Lincoln University team.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam confirmed a complaint had been laid by the general manger of community rugby at the Canterbury Rugby Union.

"We are assessing the complaint and will speak to the player concerned, and work with the Canterbury Rugby Union to identify the person or persons involved," he says.

"It is unacceptable that in this day and age anyone is subjected to any form of discrimination, particularly racial abuse, and I urge anyone responsible to show some moral courage and come forward to discuss and resolve the matter."

Anyone with information about the ordeal is asked to contact Constable Luke Vaughn on (03) 373 7400 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
