The victim of a fatal crash near Christchurch last week has been named.

Ashburton man Anthony Newton, 60, died when three vehicles collided between Burnham and Dunsandel on Thursday afternoon.

Senior Sergeant Peter Stills says Mr Newton was heading north on State Highway 1 when his vehicle crossed the centre line at Norwood.

"His vehicle collided with a trailer being towed southbound before colliding with another southbound vehicle," he said in a statement.

"The driver of the second vehicle, a man in his 40s, was taken to Christchurch Hospital where he was treated for chest injuries. The driver of the towing vehicle was assessed at the scene."

The death has been referred to the coroner and police are supporting Mr Newton's family, along with the other people involved in the crash.
