Man in court after Head Hunters meth raids

A man arrested as part of police raids on the Head Hunters gang on Tuesday can now be named.

Thomas Edwardson, 55, appeared in the Auckland District Court today charged with a raft of offenses including possession, manufacturing and supply of methamphetamine, possession of firearms and grievous bodily harm.

He was one of 10 arrested – three of whom were prisoners at Auckland's Mt Eden Prison – when 180 police officers targeted properties linked to the Head Hunters across Auckland, Ruakaka, Huntly and Tauranga in Operation Sylvester.

Edwardson received interim name suppression when he appeared in court on Tuesday but that lapsed today.

Judge Christopher Field denied bail and Edwardson will next appear in court in September.

As well as the 10 arrested earlier this week, police said they were talking to three other people – one of whom is a former prison guard – regarding the alleged supply of contraband such as tobacco and cellphones to prisoners at Mt Eden.
