There is concern a potential new charter school run by Destiny Church could signal the beginning of a slippery slope.
The church already has a private school in South Auckland but wants to upgrade it, despite already being turned down twice.
New Zealand Educational Institute president Louise Green says that should not be allowed.
"With charter schools there's a real lack of a transparency," she says. "Whereas in the public system again, we're audited each year and we have to prepare reports for our community and the Ministry [of Education]."
Ms Green says the money would be better spent on other schools in the area, which are struggling with resources.
