Fatal Taranaki fire treated as suspicious

A blaze at a house in Waitara in Taranaki that killed one person is being treated as suspicious.

The fire service was called to the property in East Beach St at about 10pm yesterday and found the fire was well involved when they arrived.

The fire is being treated as suspicious, the fire service's David Barham said.

Fire safety officers were at the property today and an investigator will be returning tomorrow.

It was initially believed there was no one inside the single-storey property and it was only after the fire was largely extinguished that the body was found, the Herald reported today.
