Dairy cooperative Fonterra has been fined $192,000 by the Environment Court for causing a foul stench in a small Taranaki town, after millions of litres of buttermilk were dumped in a wastewater plant.

There was an oversupply of raw milk in 2013, which the company dumped at the wastewater plant in Eltham.

The milk soon went off, causing a stench in the town and upsetting locals.

The South Taranaki District Council was also fined – it gave Fonterra permission to dump the milk.
