Police are investigating the death of a three-year-old boy in Taupo.

He was admitted to Taupo Hospital with critical injuries around 3pm Monday afternoon and died before he could be transferred to Starship in Auckland.

A post-mortem will be carried out to establish the cause of death today and a scene examination will take place at a Taupo address.

Police say a number of people – adults and children – have been at the address in recent days. However, it is understood the parents of the boy were not present at the address.

"It is very early into the investigation and I am not prepared to speculate on how the boy died," Detective Senior Sergeant Lew Warner said.

Police would not comment on the nature of the boy's injuries.

Other children residing at the address are currently in the care of Child Youth and Family, pending an investigation.
