One person has died in an avalanche near the Devil's Staircase road in Queenstown.
The 58-year-old male victim was initially trapped under the debris and rescued, only to die a short time later, Senior Sergent Darryl Lennane says. The cause of death is unknown and has been referred to the coroner.
There were around 20 people in the area at the time and all have been accounted for, and police are now working to advise the victim's next of kin.
