Armed police swooped on two Christchurch properties after a man went to police over an alleged assault and kidnapping.
The armed offenders squad raided one property in the suburb of Shirley and another in Cashmere today, police say.
Forensic examinations are being carried out at both houses and police have charged nine men in relation to the alleged incident.
The men will appear in Christchurch District Court tomorrow morning on charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and kidnapping.
"There is still a large amount of investigation work to be done and there are other people we want to speak with," Detective Senior Sergeant Anderson said.
"All the people involved are known to each other and there are no immediate concerns for the wider public."
Police won't comment further as the matter is before the courts.
