Two men have appeared in the Queenstown District Court following a knife-point robbery of a liquor store and a high-speed police chase.

It ended with the robbers crashing their stolen car, but the police say it could have been a lot worse.

Detective Grant Miller from Queenstown police says the man entered the Henry's Liquor Store just before 7pm yesterday and produced a knife. He then demanded cash, took a large sum from the draw and fled.

Police say the man and an accomplice then stole a BMW car and headed towards Arrowtown.

"A member of the public saw their manner of driving and decided to follow them, contacting us at the same time," Det. Grant Miller says.

The pair's getaway came to an end on Mooney's Road, after the vehicle allegedly tried to avoid spikes and headed for a police officer.

Police completed their scene examination today and at their court appearance this afternoon the two men were remanded in custody.
