Prince Harry's New Zealand nine-day tour of New Zealand earlier this year cost taxpayers more than $400,000.

The Department of Internal Affairs released a breakdown of the costs involved in the prince's trip, which saw him visit Wellington, Stewart Island, Christchurch, Linton, Whanganui and Auckland.

A total of $426,317 was spent, made up of the following:

Internal Affairs says the final bill may be slightly higher, as "some small costs may yet come in that have not yet been accounted for".

Harry's trip cost taxpayers less than Prince William, Duchess Kate and Prince George's visit in 2014, which cost Kiwis $1,035,000.
