Four killed in Muriwai Beach crash

Police have recovered the bodies of four young men after a crash on Muriwai Beach in west Auckland this afternoon.

Their four-wheel-drive hit a log at around 5:13pm, about 5km north of the Coast Rd beach access point at Muriwai. All four occupants of the vehicle died on the scene.

Witness reports of a 12-year-old boy among the passengers were incorrect.

"We've got a lot of work to do to try and locate the families of these four young men," says Inspector Mark Fergus.

"We've recovered as much as we can from the beach, but the tide is well in now and we're unable to do anything more at the crash scene."

The identities of those killed have not been released.

Police, ambulance and a rescue helicopter responded to the incident.

Emergency services had worked against the tide and fading light to recover bodies and evidence tonight.

The Serious Crash Unit will be investigating.
