Dunedin police are looking for two men after two attempted aggravated robberies overnight.

The two men were seen around a car wash at the Mobil service station on Forbury Corner in Caversham just before midnight last night.

They wore clothing over their faces and entered the service station, where they were confronted by staff members and fled the area.

About half an hour later, the two men attempted an aggravated robbery again at the Lookout Point Dairy on the corner of Riselaw Rd and Columbia Ave in Calton Hill.

They presented an axe to staff but were once again locked out before fleeing the scene.

No property was stolen and no staff member hurt, but police are still seeking the two men.

They carried a black bag with a silver fern and the words "New Zealand" written on the side.

Police urge anyone who saw any suspicious behaviour to call the Dunedin Central Police Station on (03) 471 4800.
