About 3000 pieces of mail headed for Papatoetoe have been discovered at a former post worker's house.
NZ Post confirmed today the stash of mail intended for Papatoetoe addresses had been found at the postie's home.
Northern operations general manager Michael Lewis said about 10 percent of the mail had been opened.
"New Zealand Post apologises to Papatoetoe customers for the inconvenience and upset this will have caused. We regard this matter seriously and will be laying a complaint with the police," he said.
"The postie concerned worked for New Zealand Post for a matter of weeks and has since been dismissed."
The recovered mail has now been sent to its owners with a letter explaining the delay.
Mr Lewis said customers that had received any bills due to delayed mail should explain the circumstances using the letter.
