A drunk Taumaranui man gave a new meaning to drive-thru this morning after ploughing through the local police station causing thousands of dollars-worth of damage.

The 43-year-old man crashed through the front doors of the station around 1am and now faces drink driving and wilful damage charges.

Police say the station was closed at the time and no one was injured in the incident.

Whanganui area commander Inspector Steve Mastrovich says police at the time were responding to reports of a man speeding up and down the town's main street just before the crash happened.

Following the collision, the man, who was heavily intoxicated, ran from the scene but was caught by police.

Insp Mastrovich says police don't know the man's motivation for driving into the station, but has asked the public for any information they may have.

Police are reviewing security measures at the station.

"The station has been there more than 20 years, but this is the first time anything like this has happened."

It is estimated the damage will cost between $10,000 and $20,000 of damage and repairs are expected to be finished tonight.
