Eight arrest in Canterbury drug raids

Eight people have been arrested and methamphetamine, synthetic cannabis, Ritalin, cannabis plants, and a Taser have been seized after raids across Canterbury.

The 18 search warrants executed by police at homes across Waimate today were part of a five-month operation into the sale of drugs in the local area.

Six men, between the ages of 19 and 41, and two females, aged 38 and 49, were arrested while quantities of illegal and prescription drugs were seized.

"This operation has significantly reduced the availability of illegal drugs in Waimate and other areas of Canterbury," Sergeant Michael Van Der Heyden said.

Operation Catalyst was worked by around 40 police officers.

Three of the men, aged 19, 22 and 27, are being held in custody facing numerous drug charges while the three other men were released on bail.

The two women were also granted bail.

The three men in custody will appear in Timaru District Court tomorrow.

The other five people on bail will appear on November 10.
