Emergency services have managed to free a man who became trapped in mud at a south Auckland construction site after a trench collapsed.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, is in a serious condition.

Fire communications shift manager Megan Ruru told 3 News they received a call shortly before 4pm reporting the incident.

A trench had collapsed at the Flatbush site where the man was working, causing him to become trapped in the mud.

Ms Ruru said the man was stuck from the legs down and firefighters had to use a Stokes basket and line to pull him out.

She also said firefighters had to use heavy digging equipment to ensure the collapsed trench didn't cave in further.

Three fire trucks, as well as police and ambulances attended the scene.
