Murder charge after Hawke's Bay shooting

A 28-year-old man has been charged with murder after a woman was found dead in Hawke's Bay on Monday night.

The man was shot by police after he allegedly threatened them with a firearm in central Clive during a police pursuit.

He was charged today at a bedside hearing at Hawke's Bay Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

The woman, who was found dead at an address in Westshore, was earlier today named as Victoria Foster, 24.

Police said she and the accused were in a relationship together.

A post-mortem was due to be carried out on her body in Palmerston North today. "We are very much in the early phases of our inquiry and there is a lot of work ahead of us," says Detective Inspector Mike Foster.

"We're unable to talk in detail about the circumstances surrounding the incident, what took place or any interactions between police and the man, as this could compromise our investigations."

Police want to hear from anyone who saw a man driving through Napier and Hastings on Monday night in a red 1996 Toyota Corolla.

The accused, who allegedly fired three shots during the chase, has been granted interim name suppression.

He is due to appear in Hastings District Court next month.
