A record 2.23 million visitors are expected to travel in and out of New Zealand during December and January, the Government says.

Customs Minister Nicky Wagner says that's a 4.5 percent increase compared with last summer and about 75 percent of the visitors will go through Auckland Airport.

"Air passenger volumes are expected to grow by more than 22 percent in the next five years and the Government is investing more than $6 million in faster, new generation SmartGate processing technology," she said today.

Customs has started training 21 recruits who will be on duty at Auckland Airport in time for the summer peak.
