Tourist fatally struck by truck in Napier

A tourist has died after being hit by a truck in Napier.

Emergency services were called to the scene, near the intersection of State Highway 2B and Meeanee Quay, about 5pm yesterday.

It is believed a couple who were visiting Napier were walking their bikes across the busy road.

The woman managed to get across but her husband was hit by a light truck.

The man was taken to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital but died shortly after arrival.

"Unfortunately, the man's wife has witnessed the crash, which is horrific when you think about it, and our hearts go out to her and her family," Senior Sergeant Greg Brown said.

"Tragically, this appears to be an error in judgment that has resulted in the worst possible outcome for all concerned."

The intersection is one of the worst in New Zealand for serious and fatal crashes.

There was a near-fatal accident there only a few months ago involving a logging truck and a car.

The New Zealand Transport Agency plans to install a roundabout at the intersection in 2016-2017.
