A 19-year-old Murupara man has died after a two-truck crash on McKee Rd, south of Kawerau.
The crash happened just before 4am. A logging truck was moving slowly through thick fog when a truck carrying beehives travelling in the same direction hit it from behind.
The man's family has been notified but he is yet to be formally identified.
Police officers were stung a number of times from the bees when they first arrived on the scene, but it is understood all the hives remained intact.
Police would like to thank a local couple who loaned beekeeping suits to officers to protect them while they were at the scene.
McKee Rd was closed for most of the day but has now re-opened.
