Southland fire crews are battling against strong winds as they desperately work to bring a large forest fire under control.

The blaze north of Dipton, beside the Lumsden-Dipton highway, has spread across 100 hectares.

Sally Chesterfield of Southern Rural Fire says no structures are under threat at this stage.

Luckily the fire is in a reasonably rural area. Our objective at the moment is to contain the fire. There are some farms further afield but we are keeping those people informed on where the fire is spreading to.

Six helicopters and nine rural crews are battling the fire.
