Name suppression has lapsed for the man charged with the murder of road worker George Taiaroa, who was shot dead on the job in 2013.

Quinton Winders, 45, was arrested in Stratford last week after a nearly three-year police investigation and appeared in the New Plymouth District Court on Thursday.

There was no application to continue his interim name suppression which lapsed at 4pm today.

Mr Taiaroa, 67, was working the stop/go sign at a road construction site in Atiamuri, south of Tokoroa in March 2013 when he was shot dead.

Police did not believe the person responsible was known to the family or that it was a case of mistaken identity.

Winders was held in custody by consent and will reappear in the Rotorua High Court next week.
