Mongrel Mob car winched out of river

An Air Force helicopter has winched out the wreckage of the car that fell 150m into the Mohaka River in Hawke's Bay.

The names of the three Mongrel Mob members killed in Saturday's crash have been released and police are still trying to work out whether their vehicle had been forced off the road.

Three men – Terry Stone, Ronald Rigby and Nathan Isaac – were killed in the crash. One other survived the ordeal.

"We've spoken to him initially and we're here to catch up with him again and have a more formal interview and hopefully find some more information about what's happened," says detective Senior Sergeant Brent Greville.

The men were on their way to the Mongrel Mob's 50th anniversary celebrations on Saturday, which police say went ahead without incident.

Community advocate and lifetime Black Power member Denis O'Reilly says it's a shame the crash distracted from the success of the event.

"It's a tragedy in its own right, and it's also that it occurs in the wake of a very successful event."

Police say they're still investigating whether a second vehicle was involved. They say they're also prepared for the possibility of gang retaliation.

"This is a well-known Black Power area," Snr Sgt Greville says. "We're just bearing it in mind."

"The best thing to do is to let the police do their job and let the forensic road people do their job," says Mr O'Reilly, "and establish exactly what the facts are. And then let justice take its course, if people are found to be in the wrong."

A Mongrel Mob spokesman told 3 News it was still too early to comment on the deaths, and said there's still a lot to arrange just days after the crash.

Some patched Mongrel Mob members returned to the scene today to mourn the loss of their brothers, while others took to Facebook to pay tribute.

Police say they'll now be examining the car wreckage.

The bodies of the men are due to be released to their families within 24 hours.
