North Island captivated by electrical storm

North Island captivated by electrical storm

More than 10,000 lightning strikes hit the Northern region last night, as an intense storm battered the top of the country.

Over 1300 lightning strikes were in the Auckland region and some of the spectacular footage was caught on camera.

As the sky lit up overnight, electricity was cut off to more than 2000 homes in Auckland.

MetService says storms of last night's intensity usually happen out at sea, and it's unusual to get electrical storms over land at this time of year.

Some stayed awake to document the booming thunder and sharp flashes, sending pictures into 3 News to show just how big and bright those late night flashes were.

Despite the storm, 38,000 fans watched Fleetwood Mac at Mt Smart Stadium were lucky enough to avoid the worst of the storm.

The equipment was kept covered overnight, so tonight's second concert should go ahead as planned.

Regardless of the storm's ferocity, the Fire Service says it didn't receive any call-outs, except for false alarms caused by the lightning.
