A 28-year-old man described by police has "dangerous" will appear in court today after a series of incidents in Tauranga yesterday.

Police investigating reports of a man eating grass in the suburb of Otumoetai saw him run into bush before he allegedly broke into a home and stole alcohol and a car.

He allegedly hit a police officer with the door of the car as he was fleeing, but police abandoned the chase because of the man's dangerous driving.

The car was found abandoned last night on Takitimu Drive and the man was caught in a police cordon at 6:50pm.

"It was excellent work by all of my staff to contain the male within cordons and keep the public safe," says Senior Sergeant Shannon Clifford.

"I am relieved that no members of the public or my staff were injured during the incident."

The man will appear in Tauranga District Court today facing multiple charges.
