War games invade upper South Island

More than 2000 military personnel from nine countries have taken over parts of the upper South Island in a month-long military exercise.

They're treating the area like an isolated island and are trying to make the drill as close to real life as possible.

The exercise is held every two years, but this year is the biggest, with military personnel from Australia, Canada, Fiji, France, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, the United Kingdom, and the United States on the ground.
