Whanganui death not from rival gang tensions

The death of a 57-year-old man in Whanganui was not the result of rival gang tensions, police say.

Craig Campbell Rippon, 57, died on Monday after an assault in the suburb of Gonville.

Six men have been charged with murder and will appear in court later this month.

Black Power gang members are descending on Whanganui this weekend for Mr Rippon's tangi.

Police will be closely monitoring the situation and will respond swiftly to any incidents, Inspector Steve Mastrovich says.

There had been speculation about groups involved in Mr Rippon's death, he said.

"We would like to reassure the local community that the serious assault and subsequent death of Mr Rippon was not the result of tensions between rival factions, but appears to be confined to a small group of individuals within the same faction."

Police do not believe the murder is indicative of any wider tensions or threats, Insp Mastrovich said.
