Emergency services were at the scene of a car versus car head-on crash near Queenstown.
The crash happened opposite the Gibbston Valley Winery, which resulted in minor injuries only.
Involved were five backpackers in one borrowed vehicle who were on their way to New Year festival Rhythm and Alps. They were now trying there hand at hitch hiking to get there.
Meanwhile, another crash just north of the head-on collision also happened though no one was injured.
It follows a fatal crash in Canterbury this afternoon which brought the holiday road toll to six.
