Drowning toll at six after teen's body found

The body of a teenager who went missing on Christmas Day off the Whanganui coast has been found.

The 17-year-old got caught in a rip at Castle Cliff beach and searchers have been scouring the area for him.

His body was found just north of where he went missing, police said today.

Local kaumatua have blessed the beach where he was found.

His name will not be released until family have been told, police say.

Six people have died on or in the water so far these Christmas holidays.

On Boxing Day, a 12-year-old boy died after falling from a sea biscuit on a lake in Central Otago and an 82-year-old woman drowned near Kerikeri in Northland.

On Christmas Day, a three-year-old boy drowned in a lagoon in Hawke's Bay and a man and a woman died at Ruapuke Beach on Waikato's west coast.
