An inquest into how a wanted man was found dead in the Waikato River after removing his electronic tracking bracelet and going on the run is set to get underway.

Oscar Dennis Olsen, 45, had multiple warrants out for his arrest in May, after his electronic tracking bracelet was removed and he fled Gisborne while on bail.

His body was found in the water between Huka Falls and Aratiatia Dam near Taupo, prompting a coronial inquest that will start at the Taupo District Court today.
