Waiariki MP Te Ururoa Flavell is among thousands of participants in this morning's Iron Maori event in Hawke's Bay.

The Napier triathlon is aimed at promoting exercise and healthy living to Maori.

It's the fourth time Mr Flavell has taken part and he says a person's age and level of fitness are irrelevant in the event - it's about participation and the whanau atmosphere.

"It doesn't matter about a person's age or level of fitness it is about participation. I love it."

The event includes a 2km swim, 90km cycle and 21.1km run.
