Lessons in NZ's first human trafficking case - lawyer

An immigration lawyer says the country's first human trafficking trial should raise awareness despite not guilty verdicts on the two main charges.

A Nelson High Court jury cleared brothers Jaswinder Singh Sangha and Satnam Singh of bringing Indian nationals into the country by deception.

Marcus Beveridge from Queen City Law says more education is needed.

"If they can have seminars in those sort of jurisdictions and explain the truth of our immigration programme and the framework and how this works and how this whole thing was probably delusional to start with then we don't end up with these loony outcomes."

Jaswinder Singh Sangha and another man, Kulwat Singh, were found to have knowingly supplied false information to a refugee status officer. They'll be sentenced next month.

An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Satnam Singh had been found to have supplied false information to a refugee status officer. He did not face charges of making false statements. The article has been corrected.
