Man charged for crash that killed motorcyclist near Herbert

Police have charged a 29-year-old man with dangerous driving causing death after a fatal crash in North Otago on Sunday.

A Toyota Corolla driven by the male foreign national with a female passenger crossed double yellow lines on State Highway, overtaking vehicles travelling south and collided with oncoming traffic near the town of Herbert.

A motorcyclist who was returning from the Burt Munro challenge in Southland died at the scene. He has been identified as 39-year-old Motueka man Craig Chambers.

Two other vehicles were involved whose passengers suffered minor injuries.

The man is due to appear in the Oamaru District Court next Tuesday.
