Small quake hits central NZ

A small quake has shaken central parts of the country on New Year's Eve.

The 5.1 tremor was located about 50km northwest of French Pass at the top of the South Island and off the Kapiti Coast.

It struck at 8:50am, was 110km deep and shook office buildings in Wellington.

More than 1000 reported feeling it on the GeoNet website with most describing it as light or weak.
