1 dead, 1 critical following police pursuit

Police are investigating a crash in south Auckland this morning, which left one person dead and another in critically injured.

According to police, they responded to reports of a vehicle being stolen on Hill Rd, Papatoetoe around 3:30am.

When police arrived at the scene, the vehicle took off and a pursuit ensued.

Despite efforts to get the vehicle to pull over, the chase continued through Papatoetoe and into Mangere, where the officers lost sight of the vehicle. When police caught up on Buckland Rd, the vehicle had already collided with an oncoming car.

A 16-year-old female passenger died at the scene, and the 15-year-old driver remains at Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition.

The person in the other vehicle received only minor injuries.

Police say they do not believe that safety belts were being worn at the time of the collision.

The matter has now been referred to the IPCA, while another investigation will be conducted by police.
