Police and fire service authorities are appealing for public help to establish the cause of a blaze on Mt Maunganui.
Forty fire crew, six trucks and two helicopters were used to battle the fire, which broke out last night.
The blaze left half a hectare of charred, blackened scrub scarring the face of the mountain.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner said police are aware that there were a number of persons on the mountain last night, including several mountain bikers.
Anyone who may hold information about the fire should contact Tauranga Police on (07) 577 4300. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
The landmark is closed and a scene examination is scheduled for tomorrow.
