Attempts are under way to salvage a fishing vessel that smashed into rocks in the Bay of Islands.

Three people with hypothermia were rescued from Nine Pin Rocks after the 23-tonne boat grounded early yesterday.

Northland Regional Harbourmaster Jim Lyle says divers will try to float the vessel with air bags this morning.

"It may well just be moved round to a more convenient location where it can be recovered. It will all depend on whether it's in pieces or comes out in one piece."

Mr Lyle says diesel which has leaked from the boat isn't posing a threat to the environment.
