Christchurch is being inundated with Girl Guides today - nearly 1400 of them.

The 2016 Girl Guide Jamboree at Canterbury Agricultural Park runs until January 12, where the large number of nine to 12-year-old girls will get up to all kinds of activities and adventures.

They will be joined by 350 leaders and adults who will help set up more than 500 tents to accommodate them all.

This is the first Girl Guide-only event held since 2004.

The Jamboree is being opened by Her Excellency, Lady Janine Mateparae - the Patron of GirlGuiding New Zealand.

The following six days will be filled with fun including activities such as wood work, archery, a scavenger hunt at Re:Start Mall and rock climbing.

Hundreds of kilograms of food is being shipped in to feed the army of girls and a total of 32 birthdays will be celebrated in Girl Guide style with special birthday cakes.
