The man who spent almost two weeks up an Auckland kauri tree in an attempt to prevent it being cut down has pleaded guilty to wilful trespass.

Johno Smith appeared in the Waitakere District Court this morning facing the charge which carries a maximum prison sentence of three months.

In a statement released earlier today Smith said it shouldn't be necessary to break the law in order to protect the environment for future generations.

He will be sentenced in March.
