Keven Mealamu throws weight behind student scholarships

Departing All Black Keven Mealamu has thrown his weight behind a scholarship programme for young New Zealanders.

Mealamu played judge for the national Art for Books competition, which encouraged school students to design a new cover for 1B5 exercise books.

Designs by year 7 student Anna Neumann, year 10 student Kaylee Maguire and Bayview Primary School student Meadow Edwards were all hand-picked by Mealamu.

"There were so many great illustrations and designs, it was actually really hard to pick just one in each category," said Mealamu.

The money from the sales of the books will be used to help fund tertiary scholarships for six young New Zealanders, as part of a partnership between The Salvation Army and Warehouse Stationery.

Thousands of the limited-edition designs recently hit the shelves.

Warehouse Stationery CEO Pejman Okhovat says the campaign celebrates the creativity of school students, and gives them a chance to display their work on a canvas that will be used by thousands of other pupils around New Zealand.
