Northland attack victim dies

A man has died after an attack in Northland.

A member of the public found the 35-year-old man badly injured on the side of Bonnetts Road in Kaitaia and flagged a passing police car about 11pm yesterday.

The man was placed on life support in Whangarei Hospital, Inspector Kevin Burke says.

He died this afternoon.

"This is a tragic start to the new year for a family," Insp Burke said.

"This appears to be an unprovoked attack which has resulted in this man's death."

There had been a number of people in the area attending a function.

Police expect to complete a scene examination today.

A post mortem will take place to determine cause of death.

The victim had been wearing black shorts, a grey hoody and steel capped work boots.

Police are telling his family.
