Emergency services are attending the scene of a fatal crash on State Highway 1 near Wairakei, about 20km from Taupo.
The two car crash occurred around 1pm and one person has died at the scene.
According to police, both cars were carrying two people and the condition of the other three people is currently unavailable.
However, some people were trapped and had to be freed by the Fire Service.
Diversions are in place and southbound traffic is being diverted via Palmer Mill Rd. Northbound traffic is also being diverted onto Link Rd.
The serious crash unit is investigating.
The holiday road toll now sits at nine, just five shy of last year's tally. The holiday period finishes at 6am on Tuesday, January 5.
