Despite the Warkworth rodeo being cancelled today due to poor weather, activists stuck to plan and stormed out in the rain to protest against animal cruelty.

Around 40 activists from the Direct Animal Action group assembled in front of the empty arena, calling for the Government to ban rodeo in New Zealand.

"Regardless of the cancellation today, the rodeo season continues throughout the country and animals will still be suffering. We have more protests planned," says spokesperson for the group Kathleen Lafferty.

"We'll continue to focus on cruelty at the rodeo until the Government implements a nationwide ban."

The New Zealand Rodeo Cowboys Association says the club is proposing to run the rodeo on February 21 instead.

The Far North Rodeo has also been cancelled.
