Rough weather prompts warning for beachgoers

People heading to the beach are being warned about dangerous seas.

Large waves, increased swell heights and stronger rips are expected across several beaches on the east coast of the North Island in the next 24 hours as Tropical Cyclone Victor slowly moves towards New Zealand.

Head weather analyst at WeatherWath.co.nz Philip Duncan says dangerous conditions are expected at Hot Water Beach, Whangamata and Mt Maunganui.

"They're surf beaches traditionally and getting sort of extra swells on top of that - those are the beaches that we're singling out," says Mr Duncan.

Three people drowned and many others needed to be rescued as thousands flocked to the beaches in the weekend.
