Emergency services are responding to a serious crash which has closed State Highway 2, just east of the intersection with Bombay, State Highway 1.
Diversions are in place and traffic is being sent down Koheroa Rd and Island Block Rd.
Police say heavy vehicles must take Island Block Rd, or an alternative route.
Holidaymakers heading back to Auckland from the Coromandel or the Bay of Plenty are being urged to delay their travel.
