A spate of crashes in the Waikato has prompted a warning from police about the importance of driving to the conditions.

Wet weather has been linked to 26 crashes since the rain started, two of which resulted in serious injuries.

Last night, a van lost control exiting a bridge on Cobham Dr and smashed into two vehicles, leaving both the van's driver and the driver of another car injured.

And on Gordonton Rd, a single-car smash left the driver seriously injured.

Police say it's important people check their windscreen wipers are working correctly and they extend their following distances in poor weather and visibility.

"Driving to the conditions is not just about the weather, it's about making sure we as drivers and our vehicles are also fit for the conditions," says Road Policing Manager Inspector Freda Grace.
