Power company scammers strike again

An elderly Contact Energy customer has complained to police after receiving a call from a scammer in Invercargill.

Police are investigating the complaint, which they say is similar to incidents in Christchurch and Wellington in the past month, where the elderly have been targeted by callers claiming to be from various power suppliers.

Usually the callers will advise the customer their electricity payment is overdue and power will be cut off if payment is not made that day.

Personal and banking information is obtained and bank accounts have been accessed.

Customers who receive these types of calls should directly contact their power supplier, police say.
