A body has been found inside a burnt-out car north of Blenheim.
Police are investigating the car fire in a layby off State Highway 1 in Tuamarina.
Emergency services responded to the fire around 8:30am and found a white Toyota Corolla station wagon.
Police would like to hear from anybody that saw the white car on (09) 578 5279. Anyone with information can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
An investigation is under way into the cause of the fire, police say. They are working to identify the person.
Police told Newshub earlier they were treating the fire as a crime scene.
