The Department of Conservation (DoC) will today attempt to refloat a whale stranded in Taranaki.

The female orca beached at Patea just before 8pm yesterday.

Crowds asked to stay away from stranded orca

Plans to refloat the orca overnight were abandoned due to bad weather.

Police are asking the public to stay away, as there are concerns the large crowds are stressing the animal.

DoC is planning to use a digger to create a trench in front of the orca to help her float when the tide comes in.
